After the excitement of the international trade shows the business of selecting new Christmas product for the store begins. Every year new trends emerge and this year we saw several themes that referenced the past such as Vintage, Traditional and Retro. Here are some of this years standouts and my top five picks for 2019.
Handicraft Christmas
The handmade decoration has a charm all of its own and comes loaded with memories of family history. With the current popularity of crafting many of this years decorations have a homespun charm and naivety that is conveyed in the material. Felt garlands, woollen pom-pom Christmas trees and even cross stitched messages framed by embroidery hoops. It’s a return to basics and a reminder of what Christmas is all about.
Rustic Revival
A Christmas in the country evokes feelings of comfort, familiarity and nostalgia. This year natural fabrics like burlap and calico combine with tarnished metallics and an earthy colour palette. Look for wooden decorations, distressed road signs and vintage postboxes.
Mint Slice
This year one distinctive colour stood out amongst all others, mint green. This pastel hue was visible in most collections and looks most effective against a frosted background. Sage green, which is more of a grey green was just as popular and works well with woody textures but can go up market displayed with diamanté’s and crystal sprays.
Harlequin
The circus comes to town with this theatrical theme. Performing animals take centre stage dressed in red, white and black. This is a dramatic theme, graphic and colourful that will appeal to adults and children alike.
Retro Style
For lovers of kitsch the 1950s are where it’s at. This year vintage style was a popular choice, making a comeback were shiny brite glass baubles, tinsel trimmings and lovable characters like Betty Boop and Bambi. Spikey decorations in shiny plastics take us back to the future!
